Worried about losing in 2024, Iowa’s Republican voters are less interested in talking about abortion

During a recent town hall, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was asked about his stance on abortion ahead of the 2024 presidential election, he avoided using the word “abortion”. Abortion has been largely absent as an issue in advance of this year’s Republican caucuses in Iowa, a shift from its historic support of religious conservatives advocating for abortion restrictions. This change is attributed to the Supreme Court overturning a federally guaranteed right to abortion, and an increasing fear among Republicans that advocating for further abortion restrictions could be politically risky. In interviews with GOP voters, most did not consider abortion to be a top issue in the upcoming election, instead focusing on the economy, border issues, and America’s global standing. DeSantis and other Republican candidates are increasingly emphasizing “compassion” for women in their discussions.
