With ‘God’s-eye view,’ secretive surveillance flights keep close watch on Russia and Ukraine

The article details a surveillance mission by a French air force plane over Romania, monitoring military activity in Ukraine and Russia. The flight was part of NATO’s military alliance efforts, providing real-time intelligence to ground-based commanders and signalling NATO’s readiness to act should Russian aggression extend beyond Ukraine. Regular surveillance flights, fighter patrols, and ground-based radar form a “shield” against potential conflict spill-overs. The plane, an AWACS aircraft, can detect aircraft, UAVs, missiles, and ships for hundreds of kilometers, and will be deployed for additional radar surveillance during the Paris Olympics. Russian pilots have shown displeasure towards surveillance and NATO has scrambled fighter jets to monitor close-venturing Russian flights.
