Wisconsin university regents reject deal with Republicans to reduce diversity positions
The Universities of Wisconsin’s regents have narrowly rejected a deal which would have cut staff working on diversity, equity and inclusion in exchange for a pay raise and construction funding. Brokered by the Republican Assembly Speaker, the deal was voted down 9-8 during an emergency meeting. The agreement would have seen a freeze on hiring for diversity roles, the end of an affirmative action faculty hiring program at UW-Madison, and the creation of a role at the campus focused on conservative thought. The proposed engineering building would also have been built at UW-Madison. This disagreement is seen as a broader reflection of the cultural battle over diversity initiatives in colleges throughout the nation.
