Winter weather event could lead to possible avalanches

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and the Kachina Peaks Avalanche Center have issued a warning about potential avalanches in the San Francisco Peaks due to heavy snow and rain. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the area, predicting nearly four feet of snow over the next four days. If the maximum total snowfall accumulates, it could lead to dangerous avalanche conditions, particularly in areas above the tree line. The possibility of human-triggered avalanches is also likely. Authorities recommend that skiers and riders avoid near tree line and above tree line slopes until the danger is over.
