Winter storm: Arctic blast bringing record cold and wind chills as snow moves into Northeast

An arctic blast is bringing record-low temperatures and life-threatening wind chills across the United States, affecting nearly 80% of the country. Over 120 million people are under wind chill alerts, with frostbite possible within minutes in regions experiencing sub-zero wind chills. This weather has caused at least five deaths across various states, resulting from treacherous conditions on icy roads and back-to-back winter storms. In response, schools are closing in several states. Downwind of the Great Lakes, heavy lake effect snowfall has created significant travel challenges, with regions such as Buffalo, New York, expecting between 9-18 inches of snow. The National Weather Service advises those who must be outside to dress appropriately and cover exposed skin.
