What is cyber kidnapping and how do you protect yourself?

A Chinese foreign exchange student, who was reported missing, has been found in Utah, USA, in what local police described as a case of “cyber kidnapping.” According to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), cyber kidnapping is an extortion scheme that involves deceiving and threatening victims to pay a ransom. This usually takes the form of family members being contacted and told a loved one is being held captive, when in reality, they are not in any physical danger. The Riverdale Police Department explained that cyber kidnappers often target foreign exchange students, contacting the students and their family abroad to demand ransom. Police and the FBI urge anyone approached by cyber kidnappers to contact authorities immediately and cease all communication with the criminals.
