What are those narrow white lines on Houston highways?

Residents in the Houston region have noticed narrow white lines on highways, which have left many people wondering about their purpose. The article explains that these are residues left by road crews pretreating the roads in anticipation of winter weather. The pretreatment is a chemical deicer or brine, a mixture of salt and water that helps prevent snow from sticking and ice from forming on the pavement. Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and Houston Public Works confirmed this preventative measure against freezing. TxDOT also revealed there are nine strategic salt storage locations across the state, with the closest to Houston being approximately 225 miles away.
