we need job permits, too

Juana Arreguin, a Mexican immigrant who owns an ice cream shop in Chicago, is advocating for work permits for undocumented immigrants. She and her husband, also an immigrant, spent years working without job permits before opening their business. Following President Joe Biden’s decision to expedite work permits for migrants from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Haiti, Arreguin and other immigrants, mostly from Mexico, are calling for the same rights. Advocates argue the work permits would offer workplace protections and legally set wages for the estimated 7.8 million workers in the U.S. without legal permission. Unauthorized workers in Illinois reportedly pay an estimated $900 million in federal taxes and $700 million in state and local taxes.
