Wayne LaPierre, the longtime chief of the National Rifle Association (NRA), has announced his resignation ahead of a corruption trial in Manhattan. LaPierre has led the NRA for over 30 years but faced mounting legal challenges, most notably from New York’s attorney general, Letitia James. His resignation is effective from January 31st and his longtime spokesman, Andrew Arulanandam, will act as interim chief executive. LaPierre’s tenure saw the transformation of gun culture in America but was also marked by scandals and internal upheaval, with NRA’s membership falling from nearly 6 million to 4.2 million and revenues down 44% since 2016.
