Wayne LaPierre resigns as NRA leader, days before start of his civil trial
Wayne LaPierre has resigned as CEO of the National Rifle Association (NRA) after a three-decade tenure, ahead of a civil trial in New York. LaPierre, who will officially step down at the end of January, cited health reasons for his resignation. He is one of four defendants in a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleging misuse of NRA funds to finance ostentatious lifestyles. The lawsuit claims that LaPierre personally diverted millions of NRA funds for private jets, luxe meals, and trips to the Bahamas. The civil trial, set to begin soon, could result in the defendants being permanently barred from serving on any New York charity board and place the NRA’s finances under independent oversight.
