On Tuesday morning, residents on Roosevelt Island reported feeling shaking and hearing small explosions in the Main Street area. Firefighters responded but did not find a fire or a cause for the reports, leading them to declare the situation as “unfounded” and turn the scene over to Con Edison for further investigation. At the same time, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 1.7 magnitude earthquake in the Astoria, Queens area. However, local officials have yet to confirm if the earthquake was the cause of the shaking and explosion sounds reported by the Roosevelt Island residents. No injuries were reported and no rescues were needed.
