Warming centers open across Chicago amid extreme cold
Chicago is set to experience extreme cold temperatures, prompting the activation of the city’s “Emergency Operation Plan for Extreme Cold” from Saturday through Wednesday. As part of this plan, additional warming centers are being opened for residents and new arrivals at the landing zone. The Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) activates warming areas at six community service centers when temperatures dip below 32 degrees. The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC) is also opening the Harold Washington Library as a 24/7 warming center. DFSS has extended hours at its daytime drop-in centers and the city encourages those in need of after-hours shelter to call 311 for available services.
