Vacate orders issued to stabilize New York synagogue after tunnel discovery | Brooklyn

Building officials in New York have issued emergency work orders at a historic synagogue and its surrounding buildings after finding an illegal underground tunnel. The 60ft-long (18.3m) tunnel was discovered underneath the Chabad Lubavitch global headquarters and extends under nearby buildings. The city’s department of buildings has issued orders to stabilize the buildings, vacate parts of them, and has initiated enforcement actions against the property owners for the illegal work. The tunnel was reportedly built in secret by young men in the community, leading to a violent protest when leaders tried to close it. The property owners have since enlisted an architect, engineer, and contractor to rectify the situation.
