USDA’s new EBT program gives children food for the summer

Food insecurity has various forms like consuming fast food or highly processed foods due to affordability, or sacrificing medical care to afford food. According to Feeding America, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey have food insecurity rates of 10.9%, 12.6%, and 8.7% respectively. In Philadelphia alone, one in four children are food insecure. Loree D. Jones Brown, CEO at Philabundance, aims to increase access to healthy food such as fresh vegetables and fruits. However, despite efforts to fill the gap through federal programs, the issue persists due to inadequate funding and rising costs of living. The pandemic has also exacerbated food insecurity, with more people turning to food banks for assistance.
