US retaliates after deadly drone attack on Jordan base
The U.S. has initiated retaliatory strikes in Iraq and Syria against Iran-backed militants, in response to a drone attack on an American base in Jordan that resulted in the death of three U.S. service members. The base, known as Tower 22, was hit by an Iranian-made Shahed drone, a type also used by Russians in Ukraine. The Biden administration warned of a strong response, escalating the U.S.’s involvement in the Middle East. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has plans to travel to the Middle East to work on preventing the conflict from spreading. The U.S. aims to degrade the capabilities of Iran-backed militants without causing a wider conflict in the region.
