US brings charges against four Russian soldiers accused of war crimes against an American in Ukraine

Four Russian soldiers have been charged with war crimes against an American living in Ukraine during the Russian invasion, marking the first time the US has used a decades-old law to prosecute those who commit crimes against American citizens. The American, whose identity was not disclosed, was reportedly abducted from his home in Mylove, Ukraine, and tortured at a Russian military compound for 10 days. The accused soldiers, two of whom were commanding officers in the Russian Armed Forces with the others being lower-ranking members, have been charged with unlawful confinement, conspiracy to commit war crimes, inhuman treatment, and torture. The case represents “an important step towards accountability for the illegal war in Ukraine,” according to US Attorney General Merrick Garland.
