University of North Texas President Announces Retirement

University of North Texas (UNT) President Neal Smatresk will resign this summer after a decade in office, and continue teaching biology at the university. Under Smatresk’s leadership, UNT’s enrolment has grown by more than 11,000 students, reached its highest enrolment of 47,000 students in fall 2023, and achieved $86 million in research funding. Smatresk led the university to attain a Carnegie Classification as a Tier 1 research university, and recognition as the highest-ranked institution in North Texas. UNT also became a Hispanic Serving Institution and Minority Serving Institution, enabling additional federal funding. Furthermore, Smatresk managed a successful appeal reversing a ruling blocking UNT’s policy for charging in-state tuition rates to undocumented students.
