U.S. protects wolverines in Lower 48 under Endangered Species Act
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that wolverines in the contiguous United States will be protected under the Endangered Species Act due to the increasing threat of climate change. As temperatures rise, the wolverine is set to lose much of the deep mountain snow it requires for denning and protection during colder months. This move ends a legal battle dating back to the 1990s over the fate of the wolverine, bringing into focus the power of the federal government to protect species and the impact of human-caused climate change on wildlife habitats. The wolverine population in the northern parts of the Rocky and Cascade mountains is currently estimated to be around 300.
