Changing migration routes have overwhelmed Border Patrol agents in the area, leading US Customs and Border Protection to redeploy operations officials to help process new arrivals. The area around the desert crossing has become a significant migration route, with smugglers dropping off individuals from diverse countries who walk into the US through gaps in the wall. Arizona’s senators and governor have criticized the move as unacceptable, arguing it further destabilizes the border and hurts the economy. During October, an average of 3,140 people in vehicles and 184 pedestrians entered the US daily in Lukeville.
