Trump’s campaign and court battles collide in Jan. 6 evidence requests

Donald Trump has been utilizing his indictment on charges of interfering in the 2020 election results to promote false claims, including that the federal government instigated violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in order to discredit him and his supporters. Trump’s recent court filings reveal his push for the Justice Department to provide information on far-right claims, further blurring the line between his campaign and court proceedings. His legal filings generally incorporate elements of his political narrative, with lawyers positioning the prosecutions as politicized. Trump has been known to claim, without evidence, that President Biden ordered his arrest to harm his candidacy. The former president has also been suggesting that the government is withholding information on individuals known as “Fence Cutter Bulwark” and “Scaffold Commander,” whom conspiracy theorists claim to be government agents who instigated the Jan. 6 riot.
