Trump sees backlash for saying Civil War ‘could have been negotiated’

Former President Donald Trump suggested that the American Civil War could have been negotiated, sparking backlash from civil rights groups and historians. He made the comments at a campaign stop in Iowa on the third anniversary of the 2021 Capitol riot. Charles V. Taylor Jr., the executive director of the Mississippi National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), criticized Trump’s remarks, saying there is no negotiation with slavery. Trump’s comments also drew criticism from Svante Myrick, the President of People For the American Way, who said they demonstrated a glaring ignorance of American history. Several historians also rejected Trump’s comments, saying it’s absurd to blame Abraham Lincoln for not negotiating a preemption of the war.
