Trump loses chance to challenge N.Y. gag order before trial ends
Donald Trump’s lawyers missed a deadline to seek permission from a panel of judges to quickly consider a request to file a higher court challenge to a gag order. The gag order was issued in the context of a $250 million civil fraud case against the former president and restricts him from commenting on court staff, after his references to a law clerk generated threats and harassing messages. As a result, Trump has been fined a total of $15,000 for twice violating the order. Although Trump’s lawyers argue that the gag order is a violation of his constitutional rights, New York Attorney General Letitia James’s office supports it as a measure to protect the court staff’s safety.
