Trump Fraud Trial Verdict Dependent on the Unconventional Judge Engoron
The civil fraud trial against Donald Trump, overseen by New York Judge Arthur F. Engoron, has concluded with the verdict expected next month. Attorney General Letitia James accused Trump and his adult sons of fraudulently inflating the value of their assets on financial statements provided to banks and other lenders. Justice Engoron ruled prior to the trial that Trump had inflated his net worth and announced an initial round of punishments. However, there is some debate about whether Engoron overstepped his authority by ordering the dissolution of some of Trump’s companies. This dissolution order has been paused by an appeals court until it can evaluate the judge’s decision. The future punishments could include a fine well above the $250 million originally sought, as well as barring Trump from running a business in New York.
