Transgender woman is disqualified from Ohio House race for not disclosing her former name
Vanessa Joy, a transgender woman, was disqualified from running for Ohio House District 50 due to non-disclosure of her former name. Ohio law requires individuals who have changed their names within the past five years to disclose their former names when running for office, with exceptions for marriage-related name changes but none for transgender people. Following her disqualification, Joy raised concerns over the safety of transgender candidates being required to disclose their former names. Ohio recently made headlines after Governor Mike DeWine vetoed a GOP-backed bill restricting access to transition-related care for minors and transgender girls’ participation in school sports. Three other transgender individuals have filed to run for the state legislature, and if successful, they would be the first trans state lawmakers in Ohio.
