To avoid New York rules, hundreds of migrants dropped off in New Jersey
Over the holiday weekend, approximately 450 migrants destined for New York City were rerouted to New Jersey in an attempt to circumvent a city order limiting migrant arrivals. The surge in New Jersey arrivals is a response to an executive order by New York City’s Mayor, Eric Adams, requiring charter bus companies to provide 32 hours’ advance notice of migrant arrivals and restricting drop-off times. The buses, primarily from Texas and Louisiana, had chaperones to help migrants transfer to buses and trains heading to New York City. Since 2022, New York City has processed over 161,500 asylum-seekers, 68,000 of which are in shelter and under the city’s care. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been sending migrants to Democratic-run cities to draw attention to border state difficulties and pressure President Joe Biden to secure the border.
