TikTok says it has removed all music from Universal Music Group : NPR

TikTok has removed all music by artists licensed to Universal Music Group (UMG), including popular artists such as Taylor Swift, BTS, Drake, and Olivia Rodrigo. The removal began as the license between UMG and TikTok expired. UMG has accused TikTok of not adequately compensating its artists and of enabling AI-generated music. UMG highlighted that despite TikTok’s extensive user base and reliance on music-based content, it contributes only about 1% of UMG’s total revenue. Amid ongoing contract renewal discussions, UMG is pressuring TikTok for better protection against AI-generated recordings, improved online safety for users, and increased compensation for its artists and songwriters.
