The priority of the European Union will be the support of Ukraine – the prime minister of Belgium
Belgium, which began its presidency of the European Union on January 5, has declared its priority is to support Ukraine, strengthen democracy and bolster the economy. Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander de Croo has stated that their immediate task is to agree on a financial assistance plan for Ukraine at the EU summit on February 1, with an amount of €50 billion from 2024 to 2027. The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, considers this financial aid to Ukraine the “most strategic” priority of the Belgian presidency of the EU Council. The Belgian presidency will last from January 1 to June 30 of 2024. During a December summit, EU leaders could not approve budget amendments, which include the €50 billion aid, due to Hungary’s opposition.
