The first test of the 2024 presidential election is happening tomorrow with the Iowa Republicans caucus. This event, the first of the party primary calendar for the past 50 years, is significant for former President Donald Trump’s comeback bid and could help undecided Republicans choose a challenger to back. Unlike primaries, caucuses are meetings run by political parties, and a candidate’s performance in these is often seen as a test of their campaign’s organizational strength. Votes at a caucus are cast through paper ballots distributed after the caucus starts, and then counted on-site. Despite its significance in the primary calendar, Iowa’s record at picking the president in an open year is mixed, with only Republican George W. Bush in 2000 and Democrats Barack Obama (2008) and Jimmy Carter (1976) winning the Iowa caucus and eventually becoming president.
