Texas woman leaves state to have abortion after Texas Supreme Court paused ruling that would have allowed it, her lawyers say
A Texas woman, Kate Cox, who sought a medical exemption for an abortion has left the state after Texas Supreme Court temporarily paused a lower court decision allowing the procedure. Cox, 31, was 20 weeks pregnant and had been told by her doctors that her baby had a chromosomal disorder, trisomy 18, which often results in stillbirth or early infant death. Additionally, Cox was at risk of “severe complications” due to two prior cesarean sections. The Texas Supreme Court lifted the pause after Cox left the state and ruled against Cox’s request. The lawsuit filed alleges that Texas’ strict abortion bans led to a situation where Cox would have to wait until the fetus dies inside her or carry the pregnancy to term.
