Texas Supreme Court pauses ruling allowing pregnant woman to have an abortion
The Texas Supreme Court has temporarily halted a lower court’s ruling allowing a 31-year-old woman, Katie Cox, to have an abortion. Cox is 20 weeks pregnant and her fetus has been diagnosed with full trisomy, a condition leading to miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death soon after birth. Cox’s doctors have warned that carrying her pregnancy to term could result in serious injury, including a possible uterine rupture due to previous C-sections, and could affect her future fertility. The delay in ruling has been criticized by reproductive rights advocates as potentially denying Cox urgent medical care. Abortion is outlawed in Texas from the point of fertilization, and there is a ‘bounty law’ in place that rewards individuals who sue those assisting in obtaining an abortion.
