Texas Supreme Court pauses lower court’s order allowing pregnant woman to have an abortion

The Texas Supreme Court has temporarily halted a ruling which approved an abortion for 31-year-old Dallas mother, Kate Cox, who is currently pregnant with a fetus diagnosed with a fatal condition. This case presents a challenge to one of the United States’ most stringent abortion bans. Cox’s lawsuit is reportedly the first of its kind since a landmark US Supreme Court ruling overturned Roe v. Wade last year. Furthermore, doctors have warned Cox of potential risks to her health if she carries the baby to term, due to two prior caesarean sections. The case remains pending, with Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton arguing against an exception to the state’s abortion ban in Cox’s case.
