Texas “physically barred” Border Patrol agents from trying to rescue migrants who drowned, federal officials say

A woman and two children drowned while attempting to cross the Rio Grande as Texas National Guard soldiers prevented Border Patrol agents from rescuing migrants. The incident took place near a public park in Eagle Pass, which had recently been taken over by Texas National Guard soldiers, resulting in an escalating dispute between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and President Biden regarding U.S. border policy. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed that Texas officials obstructed Border Patrol’s rescue attempts. Meanwhile, the Texas Military Department asserted that their unit searched for migrants in distress but found none, and that Mexican officials handled an incident on their side of the river.
