The Texas Nationalist Movement (TNM) and its leader, Daniel Miller, have been pushing for the secession of Texas from the United States. They recently gathered 100,000 electronic signatures to be considered on the ballot, but the Republican Party of Texas rejected including the question about Texas’ independence in the 2024 primary ballot, citing missed deadlines and incorrect signature format. Southern Methodist University political scientist, Cal Jillson, mentions legal barriers and potential economic implications as reasons why a “Second Republic of Texas” is unlikely. He notes that the state’s economy would likely decline, especially due to the loss of federal funding for infrastructure, education, and military bases.
