Texas judge grants pregnant woman’s request to get an abortion

A Texas judge has granted an emergency order for 31-year-old Kate Cox to have an abortion, despite state laws that almost fully prohibit the procedure. Cox, who is 20 weeks pregnant, discovered her fetus has trisomy 18, a rare chromosomal disorder that will likely result in stillbirth or death shortly after birth. Lawyers from the Center for Reproductive Rights filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the state’s abortion bans from applying to Cox’s case. Senior staff attorney at the Center, Molly Duane, argued that carrying the pregnancy to term could result in severe health risks for Cox, including jeopardizing her future fertility. The Texas attorney general’s office’s representative argued that Cox had not sufficiently demonstrated that she would suffer immediate and irreparable injury without an abortion.
