Texas AG says abortions still prosecutable despite court exemptions

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has warned that any doctor performing an abortion in the state could face prosecution, despite a court granting exceptions for certain cases. He made this statement after an Austin judge permitted a woman to receive abortion care due to a fatal medical condition of her fetus. The ruling from District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble also protects the woman’s husband and physician from prosecution. Texas has stringent abortion laws, with the procedure banned in most circumstances and those assisting in abortions liable for prosecution. Paxton’s office has also issued warnings to the hospitals where the woman’s doctor has privileges, threatening consequences if the procedure is carried out.
