Tentative deal reached to end ‘painful’ Newton teachers’ strike
Newton’s teachers and the city’s School Committee have reached an agreement ending a strike that lasted for over two weeks in one of Massachusetts’ largest school districts. The new four-year contract includes no layoffs, a 60-day parental leave policy, 15 days of FMLA leave, salary increases for aides and behavioral therapists, and protections for teachers’ planning or preparation time. The contract needs approval from the Newton Teachers Association and the School Committee. During the strike, the Newton Teachers Association accrued $625,000 in fines, with a judge threatening additional fines if the strike continued. The Newton School Committee plans to make up for the lost days by eliminating four vacation days during February break.
