Taiwan voters choose their next president in a poll weighing China’s threat and island’s stability
Taiwan’s presidential and parliamentary elections have taken place, which will decide the future of the island’s relationship with China. Vice President Lai Ching-te, a leading candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party, and incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen reject China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan but are willing to engage in talks with Beijing. The more China-friendly Nationalist Party, also known as Kuomintang, has fielded candidate Hou Yu-ih, who also promises to reinitiate talks with China and strengthen national defense.
