Taiwan begins counting votes in pivotal election as China looms large
Taiwan began counting votes in a significant presidential and parliamentary election that could impact China’s relationship with its democratic neighbor. Lai Ching-te, the Democratic Progressive Party’s candidate and frontrunner, faces competition from Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang party and Ko Wen-je, founder of the Taiwan People’s party. China, which views Taiwan as part of its territory, has threatened force if Taiwan rejects unification. In response, Lai warned that reversing Taiwan’s efforts to reduce over-reliance on China could lead foreign investors to abandon the country. The election, the eighth since Taiwan started holding free and direct presidential elections in 1996, comes amid increased tensions with China.
