Supreme Court Won’t Block Use of Race in West Point Admissions for Now

The US Supreme Court has declined to temporarily block race-conscious admissions at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, allowing the institution to continue considering race as part of its selection process. This decision came in response to a request for emergency relief from conservative group, Students for Fair Admissions, who have previously challenged affirmative action in college admissions. While the court’s order stated the record was “underdeveloped”, it did not express any view on the constitutional question. The group had previously successfully challenged race-conscious admissions at Harvard and the University of North Carolina. The court’s decision to exempt military academies was based on their “potentially distinct interests”.
