Supreme Court leaves Illinois semiautomatic gun ban in place : NPR
The U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed an Illinois ban on AR-15 semiautomatic weapons, marking the second time in six months that the court has declined to intervene. This law was upheld by two lower courts and was implemented after the 2022 Independence Day parade shooting, which saw seven people killed and 48 injured. The ban prohibits owning semiautomatic weapons and magazines which allow for a high number of rounds without reloading. A challenge was raised against the law from a gun retailer and a gun rights advocacy group, arguing that the ban was not in line with the nation’s history and tradition of firearms regulation. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, however, upheld the law noting that the right to bear arms only extends to weapons used for lawful purposes, not semiautomatic weapons.
