Sports gambling triggers social media harassment of college athletes

The NCAA is focusing on the rising danger of sports betting and devising a plan to protect athletes and bettors against potential abuse and addiction. The NCAA is partnering with a data science company to identify threats towards athletes, coaches, and officials on social media. Sports betting has become a major revenue source in the US, with gross gaming revenue reaching $60.42 billion in 2022, a 13.9% increase from 2021. To help combat online abuse and harassment of athletes, harsher punishments are being suggested, including a ban from attending NCAA events. The NCAA is set to launch its new “Draw the Line” initiative, which prioritizes education and harm reduction from gambling, rather than simply discouraging it.
