Spending deal reached as shutdown deadline looms
US Congress leaders have reached an agreement on the total amount of spending for the remainder of 2024 to avoid a partial government shutdown. The proposed $1.6tn (£1.2tn) figure includes $886bn for defence and over $704bn for non-defence spending, though there is some dispute over the numbers. The deal now needs the approval of the House of Representatives and Senate. The government has less than two weeks to finalize funding to prevent the suspension of some federal services. However, the House Freedom Caucus, a conservative Republican group within Congress, has criticized the deal, calling it a “total failure.”
