Southern Californians recount harrowing mudslides during deadly record-breaking storm
A historic storm, fueled by the second of back-to-back atmospheric rivers, has caused severe damage in southern California. Hundreds of landslides have occurred, killing at least nine people and damaging many homes, including that of Jesus and Wendy Barron. The storm dumped more than a foot of rain in some areas, making it one of the wettest periods on record for the region. Despite the destruction, the storm helped boost the state’s water supply, capturing at least 7 billion gallons of storm water in Los Angeles. Authorities warn of the ongoing threat of collapsing hillsides even after the rain ceases.
