South Mountain High community outraged over football coach’s dismissal

South Mountain High School varsity football coach and former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker, Byron Evans, has been removed from his coaching role, a decision that has sparked outrage within the community. Many residents, including State Senator Catherine Miranda, voiced their support for Evans during a Phoenix Union High School District Governing Board meeting. The specifics regarding Evans’ removal were not disclosed; however, the school district confirmed that he remains employed as a P.E. teacher. Despite having a losing record in recent seasons, Evans was praised for serving as a mentor and role model to his players. Board member Signa Oliver has requested the administration inform Evans of his next steps.
