North Korea has conducted a new series of artillery drills near its disputed sea boundary with South Korea, causing increasing tensions between the two nations. This follows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s calls for increased war readiness amid what he described as a deepening confrontation led by the U.S. Experts believe North Korea will continue its provocative weapons tests to improve its position in potential future discussions with Washington. The recent military exercises breach a 2018 agreement aimed at reducing front-line military tensions. The western sea boundary has been a site of conflict in the past, resulting in naval skirmishes in 1999, 2002, and 2009.
