President Biden lobbied the national Democratic party to grant South Carolina, the state that gave him his first key victory in the 2020 primary, the first-in-the-nation primary status previously held by New Hampshire. This move was central to the state’s campaign and was aimed at giving Black voters an early say in picking the party’s nominee. High-profile surrogates, including Vice President Kamala Harris, were sent to the state to boost turnout. However, Rep. Jim Clyburn suggested returning New Hampshire its delegates, which would restore its first-in-the-nation status. Despite the state’s efforts, turnout for the South Carolina primary was significantly lower than in 2020.
