Snow totals in Iowa after first heavy snowfall of 2024, up to 12.8 inches

A winter storm swept across Iowa, causing record levels of snowfall, particularly in Des Moines, where 8.3 inches were recorded on the second day of the storm, breaking the previous record from 1957. The storm left 11.2 inches of snow overall and Eastern Iowa remained under a winter storm warning, with similar snow levels reported in Iowa City. Additionally, weather forecasts predict further snow and falling temperatures, dropping to as low as 13 below zero on Sunday. The storm has affected travel and led to the closure of schools and cancellation of events in central Iowa. The city’s police department also issued 314 citations for vehicles improperly parked on snow routes or in designated neighborhoods.
