Skilled Tradespeople Say UChicago Compensation Needs to Be More Competitive to Retain Talent – Chicago Maroon

University of Chicago’s Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 73, representing University Facility Services employees, has continued to push for higher wages and improved safety policies. They aim to make UChicago competitive with other large employers in Chicago. Local 73 is working to secure better wages, benefits, and workplace policy in their new contract. They demand safety equipment like prescription safety glasses to be made accessible and a pay scale that matches other universities and employers in the area. The current offer from the University is a 2-percent pay increase annually over four years, which the union believes doesn’t cover inflation. Negotiations between the union and the University are ongoing.
