Sidney Wolfe, fierce adversary of drug companies and FDA, dies at 86
Sidney M. Wolfe, a doctor turned consumer activist known for his nearly five-decade battle against ineffective, risky, and overpriced medications, died on Jan. 1 at age 86. He spent most of his career with the Health Research Group, a part of the Washington-based Public Citizen organization founded by Ralph Nader. Wolfe’s work led to the removal of more than two dozen dangerous or ineffective drugs from the market, including Phenformin, Vioxx, and Lotronex. He also successfully advocated for warning labels about Reye’s syndrome on aspirin bottles. Despite criticism from drug companies, regulators, and physician groups, Wolfe remained passionate about exposing unsafe and ineffective treatments.
