Should The 13th Police District Reopen? March Ballot Asks Some West Town Neighbors To Weigh In

In response to a surge in citywide robberies, residents of certain West Town and Humboldt Park neighborhoods in Chicago will have the opportunity to vote on a non-binding referendum regarding reopening the 13th Police District. The referendum appears on the March 19 primary ballot for voters in precincts 14-27 of the 36th Ward. The 13th Police District was closed in 2012 and the area it served is now part of the 12th Police District. Alderman Gilbert Villegas has been pushing for the reopening of the 13th District or the establishment of a satellite 12th District office to provide additional resources to combat crime in the area. The city’s 12th Police District reported a 54% increase in robberies in 2023 compared to the previous year.
